New UW policy and faculty safety committee address chemical and physical safety in research

The University is implementing the Provost’s Task Force on Laboratory Safety’s recommendations to develop a more robust laboratory safety oversight and management program, particularly regarding chemical and physical hazards in research and teaching.

The new policy establishes campus procedures for assessing and managing safety in research and teaching activities, correction of laboratory safety deficiencies, and reflects the University’s commitment to safe laboratory practices. The policy identifies the Environmental Health & Safety Department (EH&S) as the lead unit for implementation on behalf of the University, working in coordination with the newly formed Chemical and Physical Hazards in Research Safety Committee. The new Committee and policy is expected to be in effect by January 31, 2020.

EH&S will work in partnership with the Chemical and Physical Hazards in Research Safety Committee to  develop and implement best practices that support a culture of safety within laboratory environments.

The University is committed to maintaining high standards for health and safety practices that uphold its mission for teaching, research and service. A shared partnership exists among University leadership, faculty, researchers, laboratory staff, students, and EH&S to support a strong culture of safety--a culture in which all individuals working within a laboratory or potentially hazardous environments responsibly embrace safety as a critical core value for long-term health and safety.
