Staff & Contacts List
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) offers guidelines for identifying and selecting personal protective equipment to address the range of hazards and work environments associated with commonly performed indoor and outdoor tasks at the UW.
Laboratory PPE Hazard Assessment Guide
The Laboratory PPE Hazard Assessment Guide identifies hazards to which laboratory workers may be exposed and specifies PPE to protect against these hazards during work operations. When completed, the document and its associated training will satisfy the Department of Labor and Industries requirements for PPE as required in Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 296-800-160.
Fire Code Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Compliance
Labs, shops and other locations that use chemicals must comply with the hazardous materials provisions of the International Fire Code, which limits quantities of certain chemicals in specific locations.
Caution and Warning Signs
Caution Signs are required to be posted at the entrance to a space where hazardous materials are stored or used. Warning Signs alert personnel and visitors to health and safety hazards beyond those identified in the Caution Sign.
NFPA Hazard Ratings and Permit Thresholds
The NFPA hazard rating system refers to a safety standard by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) that outlines a hazard rating system for emergency personnel.
The NFPA 704 standard also defines the necessary signage and information that needs to be displayed to alert personnel of the type of hazardous materials that are present.
Incompatible Chemicals Focus Sheet
The Incompatible Chemicals Focus Sheet contains a Chemical Compatibility Chart chart adapted from the CRC Laboratory Handbook which groups various chemicals into 23 groups with examples and incompatible chemical groups.
This chart is by no means complete but it will aid in making decisions about storage.
For more complete information please refer to the MSDS/SDS for the specific chemical.
Lab Employee Safety Training Record
UW research and training laboratories can download and use the Lab Employee Safety Training Record to record trainings related to the Chemical Hygiene Plan, chemical safety, equipment safety and lab-specific procedures.
A PDF of this template is available in the UW Laboratory Safety Manual.
Lab Safety Rating Calculations
Safety rating calculations are based on an inspection's answers to 30 target questions derived from the checklist. These target questions address the most pressing issues related to lab safety.
Visit the Laboratory Safety page for more information.
