New tools on the Lab Safety Dashboard

On July 8, 2019, EH&S launched a new version of the Lab Safety Dashboard, a tool vital to our campus’ safety management in research and teaching laboratories. The dashboard has portals for scientific department principal investigators, chairs, deans and UW executives that allow them (or their designee) to review safety performance data and inspection reports for their units.

The portal for principal investigators (PIs) and chemical hygiene officers (CHOs) now has the following new features:

  • Self-Inspection tool: PI or CHO can perform and record a self-inspection of their laboratory spaces.
  • Lab Selection for PIs: PIs can select from a list of labs to view data and reports for a specific lab by location.
  • Lab Selection for Chemical Hygiene Officers: A CHO working with multiple PIs can select from a list of PIs to open the appropriate dashboard.
  • Lab photo: Each lab location will have a profile picture added.

The self-inspection tool allows PIs and CHOs to conduct and record an audit of their laboratory spaces using the lab survey checklist. The inspection must be completed within 72 hours for the inspection to become a permanent record. Refer to the checklist explanations page as needed for details about each question.

All UW labs are expected to conduct at least one self-inspection annually and it is recommended that these are done at least several months after the most recent Lab Safety team survey of the lab. The Lab Safety Dashboard will save the self-inspection reports completed for each lab, and the last four will be visible on the dashboard.

Continued features of the dashboard include each lab's safety performance rating, as well as the school’s average, the overall UW average, current survey reports and previous survey reports. The dashboard provides a PDF copy of the most recent survey, the survey date, the date the comments section will close, the number of findings, the number of responses and EH&S’s acknowledgement of the responses. Responsible parties / PIs and the CHO may review and respond to the current survey findings and comments within 30 days of its publication. Previous inspection s can be viewed but are closed for editing. If applicable, PIs and CHOs can print their Lab Safety Award certificates from their dashboard portal.

Members of the research community are invited to visit their dashboard portal to try out these new features.
