Intended audience

This course is required for University personnel who use only sealed sources of radioactive material.

Description

This course teaches radiological fundamentals, regulations and oversight, biological effects of radiation, and the safe use of sealed sources at the University of Washington. This training focuses on exposure control, ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) concepts, utilizing time, distance, and shielding to reduce external dose, and University of Washington specific policies for ordering and disposing of sealed sources.

This training does not fulfill training requirements for persons who use open (unsealed) sources of radioactivity or high activity gamma irradiators. To become a Radiation Worker on a sealed source Radiation Use Authorization (RUA), contact EH&S Radiation Safety at radsaf@uw.edu to begin this process.
