New drowning prevention guidance

The Environmental Health & Safety Boating Safety Program created two new resources to help UW personnel identify and reduce the risk of drowning while working on, over, or alongside water. These resources are designed to prioritize the safety of UW personnel and clarify guidance from Washington State Department of Labor & Industries regarding the selection, use, and maintenance of personal flotation devices (PFDs) to protect workers when drowning hazards exist in the workplace.

What is my responsibility to prevent drowning?

Supplemental Crane, Hoist and Rigging Program Template

The Supplemental Crane, Hoist and Rigging Program Template is modified by University units to addresses unit-specific hazards and safety guidance to ensure the safety of personnel and prevent personal injury or illness that could result during the use of overhead cranes, hoists, and the rigging of loads.

Visit the Cranes, Hoists and Rigging Safety webpage for more information.

Shop and Maker Space Safety

University personnel, students and visitors in shops and maker spaces may be exposed to hazardous machinery, physical hazards, hazardous materials or procedures that could result in injury.

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides resources for shops and maker spaces to address the health and safety issues they may encounter.

General Health and Safety Training Course Selection Guide

The General Health and Safety Training Course Selection Guide provides guidance on identifying the health and safety related training classes available to all University of Washington employees.

This guide helps UW personnel determine which trainings are relevant to the job, whether or not the training is required, how the training is offered, and how frequently it is to be taken.
