EH&S staff recognized for outstanding service

The UW Environmental Health & Safety Department (EH&S) congratulates EH&S staff who have been recognized for outstanding service and dedication to the UW community through the UW Awards of Excellence.

The UW Staff Together We Will Awards were created to celebrate outstanding staff contributions made during the extraordinary challenges of 2020. The Together We Will Awards will serve as a temporary replacement until the Distinguished Staff Award program returns in October 2021. EH&S colleagues Denise Bender, Brandon Kemperman, Rebecca Stenberg, Sheryl Schwartz and Karen Crow were nominated for this award for their outstanding efforts responding to the University’s health and safety needs throughout the pandemic.

This year, Katia Harb, senior director of EH&S, was one of the recipients of the David Thorud Leadership Award, given to UW employees who have demonstrated exceptional abilities to lead, serve, inspire and collaborate with broad impact. As the University’s public health officer during the COVID-19 pandemic, Katia worked tirelessly with EH&S teams and campus partners to enable the University to make critical, evidence-based decisions under pressure with extremely high stakes. The collaboration with public health officials, subject matter experts and pandemic response teams under Katia’s leadership has resulted in the implementation of COVID-19 prevention policies that have kept our campuses safe.
