New safety considerations for youth in STEM programs

Are you involved in planning or hosting a science, technology, engineering and math focused (STEM) program for youth at the University? EH&S, in conjunction with the Office for Youth Programs Development and Support, recently released new safety considerations for youth in STEM environments as a resource for UW faculty and staff.

The goal of these safety considerations is to provide a valuable learning experience while ensuring the health and safety of minors, employees and students. You will learn what activities can safely be included in a youth program, what to avoid, and what activities/environments are prohibited for minors.

The safety considerations are based on existing federal, state and university policies that address workplace restrictions for minors. Keep in mind that your department, college or unit may also have guidelines for minors in the workplace. Be sure to contact your department administrator for more information.
